Fair Michigan was formed as a result of a direct need in Michigan. While marriage for same-sex couples is the law of the land now, there is still much work to be done to ensure that all women and LGBTQ people enjoy adequate legal protection. It is still legal to deny housing, employment, and medical treatment solely based on gender identity or sexual orientation. As an example, Jami and Krista Contreras, a Michigan lesbian couple, took their newborn for their first check-up and the doctor refused to treat the child due to the sexual orientation of the child’s parents.
There has been little to no progress from the established statewide organizations who are representing the LGBTQ community. The consensus from these organizations is that with lobbying efforts, the Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act will be amended to include gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation. We at Fair Michigan believe that the ultra-conservative Michigan legislature will not pass these necessary amendments. We further believe that Michigan needs as many organizations and ideas possible to provide strong legal protections for our LGBTQ residents.
We have formed a broad coalition of attorneys, former prosecutors, law enforcement officials, faith leaders, business leaders, and political professionals who will be educating, organizing, and advocating for women and LGBTQ people with a non-partisan approach, which will result in changing hearts and minds.
Fair Michigan will begin by organizing across the state, reaching out to women, the LGBTQ community, faith leaders, prosecutors, law enforcement, and lastly by developing a legal services division for women and those in the LGBTQ community who need legal representation, but cannot afford it.
